How to Create Engaging Patient Software

Screen Shot 2012 04 02 at 9.32.48 PM How to Create Engaging Patient SoftwareMy colleagues at Macadamian have just released a new whitepaper titled How to Create Engaging Patient Software. I am very passionate about this topic, so I was thrilled to be invited to co-author the document.

I feel strongly that patients are the most under-utilized resource in healthcare, and have worked for/with several organizations over the past few years to take patient engagement solutions to market.

One of those organizations was MD Physician Services, where I was the product manager for the mydoctor.ca Health Portal.  I saw first hand the benefits to both patients and clinicians who use a well designed solution for activities such as managing chronic conditions, facilitating secure communication and sharing medical record data.

The whitepaper provides guidance to software vendors and healthcare institutions who are designing patient software.  It addresses a problem that is repeated over and over again when designing patient software – the patient experience is an after-thought.  Most patient software solutions are designed around the goals of clinicians.  Developers will often use existing clinical software solutions such as an EMR (electronic medical record) as their starting point and retro-fit the functionality for the patient.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the whitepaper.

Improving your odds with Neuromarketing

Last week I attended a fascinating seminar called Neuromarketing. I rarely leave a seminar thinking that it will change the way that I market and sell products, but this one was definitely worth the time on a rainy Thursday morning. This seminar was different. There are countless marketing seminars out there, and numerous books have [...]

A marketing lesson from Don Juan

Don Juan Chip Wagon - Toronto

This past week I attended the OCE Discovery conference in Toronto on behalf of PatientWay. On the last day, the weather was beautiful and I needed a small break from the 2,000+ attendees, so I stepped outside for a walk during the lunch break. I stopped by the Rogers Centre’s gift shop to pick up [...]

Winning marcom starts with a positioning document

Positioning document

This week I had the opportunity to lead a positioning document work group with PatientWay. The sales team wanted to clarify their “elevator pitch”. So to avoid putting the cart before the horse, we took a step back and used a couple hours to discuss and answer a few simple but crucial questions. I hadn’t [...]

What is marketing?

What is marketing?

Sounds like a simple question.  But try to provide a definition that doesn’t come from a university textbook. There are countless definitions out there and many will put you to sleep. For example, Wikipedia says “Marketing is the process of performing market research, selling products and/or services to customers and promoting them via advertising to [...]

An infographic is worth a thousand words

Infographic - strongly countries

Hans Rosling’s 200 countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes was my favorite video of 2010.  He does a phenomenal job at using 120,000 data points to tell a story.  If you have not seen this video, take a look. Awesome stuff, agree? The traditional way to share this type of research data is with a lengthy [...]
